The Mid-Season Slump: How Fall Athletes Can Stay Strong, Fast & Confident
The season started with excitement, energy, and big goals. But now it’s October.
Practices have added up. Games are getting more important. Schoolwork is getting heavier. Your body may feel more tired than it did a few weeks ago.
Welcome to the mid-season slump.
For fall athletes, this is the point in the season when performance can begin to dip if training, recovery, and preparation aren’t managed correctly.
Why Does the Mid-Season Slump Happen?
Athletes are balancing a lot during the season:
Multiple practices and games each week
School and homework
Less recovery time
Increased soreness and fatigue
Repetitive sport-specific movements
Less time devoted to strength and speed development
As fatigue builds, athletes may begin to feel slower, weaker, less explosive, or less confident on the field.
The answer isn't always doing more.
It’s about training smarter.
Don’t Stop Training During Your Season
One of the biggest mistakes athletes make is completely eliminating performance training once their competitive season begins.
While the volume of training should change, athletes still benefit from maintaining the qualities they worked so hard to build during the offseason.
That means continuing to work on:
Speed. Strength. Mobility. Explosiveness. Deceleration. Movement quality.
Without consistent training, athletes can gradually lose some of the physical qualities that helped them enter the season performing at their best.
How the Parisi Program Can Help
At Parisi Speed School of Bridgewater, our goal during the season isn't to exhaust athletes before their next game. The goal isn't to make an athlete tired.
The goal is to help them continue performing when the season gets tough.
Our coaches can adjust training based on the athlete's schedule and current needs.
In-season Parisi training can help athletes:
Maintain SpeedContinue reinforcing proper sprint mechanics and explosive movement.
Maintain StrengthHelp athletes stay strong throughout a long competitive season.
Build Better Movement HabitsImprove mechanics, body control, deceleration, and stability that can support safer movement.
Maintain ExplosivenessKeep the nervous system exposed to powerful, athletic movements without unnecessary training volume.
Build ConfidenceAthletes who continue preparing their bodies can step onto the field knowing they've put in the work.
Quality Over Quantity
During the offseason, an athlete may train several times each week.
During the season, 1–2 quality performance sessions per week may be enough to help maintain strength, speed, and athleticism while allowing time for practices, competition, and recovery.
Finish Strong
Championships aren't won during the first few weeks of the season.
Athletes need to be prepared to perform when the games matter most.
If your athlete is starting to feel the mid-season slump, this is the perfect time to evaluate their training, recovery, and performance plan.
At Parisi Speed School of Bridgewater, we're here to help athletes stay FAST. STRONG. CONFIDENT.
